Some years before her birth, her parents had settled down in a farm just outside of Tantervale. Here, the small family lived a comfortable but humble life, rearing chickens, sheep and goats as well as growing some basic crops such as potatoes and carrots.

When Amélie was barely four, her mother passed away, after a sudden bout of water-borne illness. Ever since that day, Amélie's father became quiet and withdrawn, although still devoted to his work and his daughter.

Amélie would have surely been content with this life, but the Maker had other plans for her.

At the age of 11, Amélie's magic started to manifest in small and minor ways. She'd knicked her finger when tending to the crops, but the cut healed itself straight away. Although she had always been the type of girl to bruise easily, her skin was now blemish free. It wasn't something she paid much heed to, for all the stories she had heard of magic told tales of demons and people setting fire to things with their minds.

But then, a moment came when she could hide her talents no longer. Her father had been working on repairing the house's roof when he stumbled and fell awkwardly to the ground, fracturing his leg. Amélie's resulting anguish when she came to his aid resulted in an outpouring of her magic, repairing the broken leg immediately.

In that moment, Amélie's father saw his daughter for what she was, and a week later the templars from the Circle of Magic at Hamsal had come to take her away. Her father at first attempted to portray it as an opportunity, a place where people like her went to learn how to control their skills, to become better mages. When Amélie resisted regardless, her father grew more vicious, telling her that her magic endangered them and that he couldn't be burdened with a daughter like her. Broken down, Amélie relented.

The Hamsal Circle wasn't a terrible place. For someone used to the day-to-day toil of farming, the living conditions at the Circle seemed luxurious.

It took Amélie a very long time to come to terms with the fact that she was, indeed, a mage. The thought of doing her Harrowing terrified Amélie, for she was certain she was surely incompetent, but the date was looming on the horizon when the circles rebelled.

Instead of attacking their former chargers, many of the templars at the Hamsal circle provided the mages with a choice. Go, and we will not be responsible for happens to you, or stay, and we will do our best to protect you as is our charge.

As accustomed as Amélie was to the Circle, her heart of hearts still yearned for her old life, a life where she didn't carry the Maker's curse around with her.

So, she left for her family's farm near Tantervale to find her father.

He wasn't there.

Personality

On the surface, Amélie is a hard-working girl who likes to keep her head down and not draw attention to herself. Having grown up just outside Tantervale, Amélie has inherited many of the characteristics familiar to her countrymen: she is dour, she has little sense of humour, she is a fervent believer in the rules. While she considers herself to be modest, others sometimes regard these traits as both sanctimonious and self-deprecating.

Not all of these mannerisms are attributable to her place of birth, however. Her father's rejection of her when she was sent to the Circle has greatly effected her self-esteem, and she has internalised a lot of the narratives that exist in Thedas about mages. As a devout Andrastian, Amélie wholeheartedly believes that her magic she has been marked by the Maker, and believe that she has both been cursed because she is a terrible daughter but also blessed with the ability to help people. As a result, most of learning had been focused on healing much to the chagrin of her teachers who had identified her as a powerful mage whose main short-coming is her lack of confidence.

Amélie's main struggle comes from her desires as an individual and what she feels is her debt to society. In her perfect world, she would like nothing more to settle back down on a farm and raise some animals and have a family one day. But these are things she is not allowed to want because she is a mage and not only that, but she also has an obligation to use her powers to help in whatever way she can, as per the Chantry's teachings of 'magic exists to serve man and never to rule over him'. While she originally ran away in the initial chaos of the mage rebellion, her sense of duty is calling her back. Duty is the only thing she has left now, because after she failed to find her father, she is starting to feel more and more sure she doesn't deserve to be happy.

Opinions & Affiliations

Amélie's main affiliation is that she is a Circle Mage and although she doesn't pay too much attention to Circle politics, still bring an apprentice, she is fairly loyal to the Circle and would identify herself as a loyalist to anyone who asked, although her deeply buried feelings would lead her to being more of an isolationist. In the current world environment, mages are clearly dangerous and Amélie feels that the Circles are necessary because how can the mages govern themselves if the Circles which have existed for centuries failed so miserably? (She will be utterly defensive and upset if anyone points out her flawed, circular logic.) The Circles are also home, the only place where she still has people that cared about her.

In terms of other politics, Amélie has no strong opinions in regards to race and such: she'd never spoken to an elf personally until she went to the Circle. She's a bit wary of other races, but would be polite to them if they interacted.

Strengths & Weaknesses

+ healing magic is Amélie's main speciality and she can do about everything up to healing broken bones and such. she knows a few other basic skills in the creation school of magic.
+ growing up on a farm, she knows the basics of animal husbandry and harvesting
+ she could probably set a candle on fire with her magic if really pressed.

- her lack of self-confidence is one of the biggest hurdles Amélie has to overcome. She genuinely considers herself as incompetent at everything that is not one of her strengths and feels defeated at the thought of working on things she does not excellent at naturally.
- her loyalty to the circle is rather blinding at this point in time and she is very, very stubborn about the things she feels are right

Inventory

+ a satchel containing rations, a spare change of clothes, and bunches of basic herbs
+ a locket with a drawing of one of her ancestors
+ that's it that's all her earthly possessions

Motivation

Seeing as her personal goals are unachievable and the Circles have fallen, the Inquisition seems the next best place to be if she wants to lend a helping hand. She could've gone back to Hamsal but she fears that it will only be a matter of time before it is overrun.

Basically, she wants the Inquisition's protection.

SAMPLES

SENDING CRYSTAL, upon arrival

Hello. My name is Amélie. I'm from the Circle of Magi at Hamsal. I know it might be too much to hope, but I was wondering if anyone else from my Circle has made their way here. It's been so long since I've seen a familiar face.

If there's no-one...Then I would be happy to talk to any other mages, or anyone, really, who would speak with me. It has been a while since I've been among so many other people I scarcely know where to start.

ARRIVAL AT SKYHOLD
Amélie had bartered the last of what valuables she had collected from her childhood home for passage across the Waking Sea. While she could have navigated the land passage through Orlais, it would have been a long and treacherous journey and her chances of being uncovered would have been much higher. She had long divested herself of her staff. It was not necessary for the magic she needed and for the rest of it... the rebellion hadn't lessened her distrust of magic in general any.

Once she had made ground in Ferelden it felt that people fleeing to the safety of the Inquisiton were everywhere and Amélie had allowed herself to relax, however marginally, knowing that she had almost made it to her destination. Perhaps in another time, another life, she would've taken the time to do some exploring, to see the sights that this new country had to offer but for now her legs felt as though they moved automatically one foot in front of the other, up towards the Frostbacks, as though she had no control over her limbs, over her life.

And it was true: ever since she'd been sent to the Circle she had known her future had been set in stone. She had tried to change that, do something for herself for once, and what had that gotten her? Only bitter disappointment. Better not to hope than to hope anyway and have to live with the crushing weight on one's chest.

One foot in front of the other, and soon she would see the castle over the edge of the horizon.
